If I attempt to talk about my love of kitesurfing and my enthusiasm with my colleagues at work, I am confronted with a mixture of disapproval, confused glances and lots of anxiety. Kitesurfing can be dangerous? It’s a risky sport that only insane people are able to do! To back up their claim I was sent YouTube videos of crash compilations, or advised me to look on the web for stories of horror and other extreme accidents. My sister isn’t able to imagine me doing this. However, my mom can’t stand the idea and smiles with a smile “Well… If it makes you feel happy…”

As an Health and Safety Professional, I’m required to conduct an assessment of risk and develop an approach statement for nearly every task I perform at work. Someone who earns a living by telling people what’s safe and what is not should not engage in risky and dangerous other activities such as kitesurfing. It is probably safer to observe other “crazy” people doing it at the comfort of your sofa. Are you really serious?
Are kitesurfing and kitesurfing unsafe?
Kitesurfing is only as risky as the attitude you adopt. Kitesurfing, like dogs can be dangerous if they’ve been improperly trained, is only dangerous when you are in the incorrect mindset and attitude.
It’s not a good idea to have several beers and then head to the beach to tie your kite to a 12m model with 25 knots of wind offshore… Then try to perform some tricks similar to the man who is who is watching you from the bar…
It is recommended to go to the beach, locate an accredited school to provide the right instruction. You will be taught about the dangers and safety and best practices to manage the residual risks. Learn to assess the conditions of the water and wind as well as the entry and exit points, as well as who is the most important person in the water. Learn how to begin and land a kite. You will be able to manage your kite and know what you need to do if things don’t go according to plan. Additionally, you will learn how to navigate the board, and how you can help it in the event that you are lost. These fundamentals will allow you to build your kitesurfing skills even after you’ve quit taking lessons.
And, perhaps more importantly is that you will learn to appreciate the game. It will be clear that it’s not dangerous or extreme when done correctly. You’ll be able to be able to read and connect to the natural world and you’ll also be able to discover how to remain totally free. You’ll be inspired to go to places you’ve not been before , and meet people you didn’t even know existed. You’ll be able to fly. Literally. You will discover that life is never identical.
Kitesurfing is a risky activity. Kitesurfing can be dangerous for people who feel at ease at home and call everyone insane. You’re not a person. The most dangerous thing is trying because it could alter your life for good.
My dear friend, I’ll meet you out on the water. Let’s get together…
